Officials have detained the mother of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt's nephew amid the Trump administration's ramped-up immigration enforcement efforts, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents took the woman into custody in Revere, Massachusetts, this month, the source said.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Bruna Caroline Ferreira is a "criminal illegal alien from Brazil" who overstayed her tourist visa, which expired in June 1999.
The woman has an arrest on suspicion of battery, the spokesperson said. Its not clear how the case was resolved.

(6,489 posts)they were married. He has a different wife according to another post. But close enough.
"Ferreira has an 11-year-old son with Michael Leavitt, who is the press secretarys brother. Ferreira emigrated from Brazil as a child and is being held in ICE custody in Louisiana. Michael Leavitt, a New Hampshire resident, told WMUR that his son lives full-time with him and his wife, and added that Ferreira still has a relationship with her son. He said that his son has not spoken with Ferreira since her arrest several weeks ago."

(59,479 posts)I'm sure Leavitt prefers the flak she will get from her relatives to the sudden unemployment she would experience from publicly protesting against the decision.
My elder daughter, her husband, and my sister-in-law, as well as my younger daughter and her two little girls are all American citizens born outside the USA. My wife, who has no intention of ever living in the USA, still enjoys visiting, and has every right to do so for stays under 90 days. With my younger daughter a partner in one of the biggest international law firms based in New York, I wonder how much it would cost the government if some ICE thug tried to try to assault and detain any of them (more than I make in ten years, I'll bet!).

(5,343 posts)Earlier this month, Bruna Ferreira was leaving her home in Revere to pick up her 11-year-old son, Michael Leavitt Jr., from school in New Hampshire when her car was suddenly swarmed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. They demanded her name and drivers license, but Ferreira did not have the document on hand, her sister, Graziela Dos Santos Rodrigues, recounted.
They were not the most gentle with her, she said.
Ferreira, 33, was detained and taken to the police station nearby. Stunned and desperate for help, she repeatedly told authorities the name of her sons aunt: White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, one of the most visible figures in the Trump administration and a prominent defender of its immigration crackdown.
Michael Leavitt Sr., 35, the brother of Karoline Leavitt, 28, and Ferreira broke up more than a decade ago, Dos Santos Rodrigues said. They share custody of their son, who lives primarily in New Hampshire, she said.
Im sure my sister was terrified, frantic. Shes been here since she was 6 years old. Shes more American than she is anything else, said Dos Santos Rodrigues, 27, who lives in Winchester and works in child care. Im sure she tried to just use whatever she could come up with in the moment. However, it didnt really help very much.
